Here’s a workout dilemma I get asked about a lot: What fitness equipment do you need to buy?
Especially if you don’t want to spend a ton of money or don’t have a lot of room.
I’ve got 3 suggestions for you that you can use at home or on the road if you’re traveling.
1. Resistance bands – These are long stretchy bands with handles on each end. They’re a great way to add some strength work to your routine.
You can anchor them under your feet to do biceps curls, press them overhead for shoulder presses, and even wrap them around a sturdy railing for some “pulling exercises” to work your back muscles!
TIP: Inspect your bands before every workout to look for signs of wear, so they don’t break on you. Also, make sure they’re firmly anchored when you use them, so they don’t slip or end up snapping you.
2. Mini-bands (also called hip circles and booty bands) – These are resistance bands in the shape of a circle. They’re usually several inches wide, and are made of a thick stretchy material.
Mini bands can take your leg workouts to the next level by adding resistance to your quads, glutes, and hamstrings. They definitely can bring the burn factor into play!
All you have to do is step into a band with both feet, and slide it up to your thighs and do squats, side steps, donkey kicks, and more.
Tip: Make sure you use proper form – especially if you’re feeling tired, and keep your core engaged!
3. Suspension trainer – This is in the hall of fame of home and travel fitness gear because you can get an amazing total body workout at every fitness level! It’s like having a portable gym.
A suspension trainer uses straps and handles to help challenge (or assist) your stability. You can use it for your lower body, upper body, core, and pretty much any muscle you want to work in your body.
TIP: Suspension trainers (like the TRX) must be attached to a very strong anchor that can support your bodyweight – like a beam, tree, pull-up bar, or playground equipment.
