Let’s be honest: saying “no” to family or friends during the holidays can be challenging.
Whether it’s:
- Saying “no thanks” to food you don’t want at holiday gatherings
- Skipping late-night drinks to stay fresh for the next day
- Or passing on commitments to prioritize rest
…it’s not always easy to protect your time, energy, and routines.
For years, I struggled with this, too. I remember feeling like I had to say yes to every holiday invitation or snack, even when I knew it would leave me feeling tired or frustrated later. It wasn’t until I realized how much better I felt when I set boundaries that I finally permitted myself to say “no” when needed.
If you’ve ever felt the same way, you’re not alone.
Enjoy the Season Without Losing Your Balance
The holidays are meant to be joyful—but that doesn’t mean abandoning all of your goals.
Heading into the season with a clear sense of your non-negotiables (and where you’re open to flexibility) can help you stay grounded and aligned.
For example:
- Maybe sticking to your workout routine is non-negotiable because it keeps you energized, but you’re open to shortening your workouts on busier days.
- Or, maybe eating gluten-free is non-negotiable for your health—but you’re flexible about enjoying a few gluten-free treats instead of sticking strictly to whole foods.
- Maybe getting to bed by 10 is a must—but you’re okay with making a rare exception for a holiday party.
It’s all about balance and knowing what works for you.
Struggling to Communicate Your Boundaries?
If setting boundaries feels uncomfortable, try these simple phrases:
- “I’d love to, but I’ve got some things I need to take care of first. Let’s catch up soon!”
- “That looks delicious, but it doesn’t agree with my stomach.”
- “I’m going to head out early tonight to get a good start tomorrow.”
- “I’d love to join, but I’m taking some time to recharge. Let’s plan something for later!”
- “This looks great, but I’m going to pass for now!”
Saying “no” might feel disappointing to others at the moment, but it’s a powerful way to honor your needs—and that’s just as important as any holiday tradition.
Remember What Matters Most
The holidays are about joy, connection, and celebration.
And that includes joy and connection with yourself.
