Practice improves everything and creativity is no exception. If you want to be more creative, you must practice being creative. That does not mean you have to practice it through your normal methods of being creative.
To be creative is to create something. What does not matter. Yes, every form of art imaginable counts as creating, but a lot of other things you might not normally think about do too. Here are a few ideas for things you can do, no matter what your personality is or how “artsy” you consider yourself.
Cooking and Baking
Preparing food is perhaps the oldest way in which humans create something. It is, or can be, an exceptionally creative endeavor. You can create by making regular meals for your family or step up your efforts and learn to cook more complicated dishes.
Or you can specialize in and practice cooking one type of food. Many people who otherwise disdain cooking love to bake, and find pleasure in making pies, cookies, or cakes. Decorating cakes and other pastries is a creative activity all its own.
Build Something
Building is another one of the oldest forms of creating. You do not have to go out and build a shed in the backyard (unless you want to, that is). Putting together a piece of furniture counts. So does building models. Are you mechanically inclined? Why not build and launch model rockets or wooden sailboats? Even rebuilding vehicles counts as a creative activity.
Start a Garden
Yes, gardening is a type of creation. It has even been said that gardening is the slowest of performance arts. Planting a garden, whether it is a few pots or a space with massive rows of vegetables, is a way of creating. It also does not matter if you grow ornamentals or vegetables, or both. Nor is gardening all about plants. You can put in walkways and other features and decorate your garden like a room in your house. It is also a great form of exercise.
Fix Something
Repairing or restoring things is also creative. You must use many of the same creative skills to fix an object as you would to create it. Fixing broken objects and appliances, performing household repairs, and doing home improvement projects all count. So does mending clothes and textiles.
You can find something new to create that will help you improve your overall creativity and that you will enjoy. Just look until you find something you enjoy.
