Joy is one of those things we often take for granted. Joy is what brings us happiness and contentment. Realizing who you are now comes from knowing what brings you joy.
What things you do each day bring you energy and keep you engaged? Which ones drains your focus and takes away from your motivation?
If you are not sure, try this exercise: Log every major activity you do for a month. Make sure you list the things you enjoy and those you enjoy not so much.
Look for any patterns. What areas do you find yourself fully engaged and enjoying the tasks? Schedule more of these types of things into your life.
Here are six activities that bring joy.
Creative activities. The activities that put us in a state of flow often are the creative ones -things like playing music, cooking, painting, reading, writing, building things, arts and crafts or sewing. These activities are often done in a state of calm.
Movement activities. Physical activities put can also put us into a state of flow. Movement does not necessarily mean exercising in a gym, although it could. Activities like gardening, golf, swimming, biking, or hiking get our heart moving while relaxing us.
Play activities. Engaging in activities that are pleasurable and feel like play are uplifting and enjoyable. It could be as simple as throwing a Frisbee with your dog, dancing, attending a concert or snuggling with your love. Play activities do not have a purpose other than making you feel relaxed and happy, keeping you focused on the present moment.
Activities that bring inspiration. Finding joy through activities that stretch our current views and take us out of our normal daily life can include yoga, meditation, and prayer. Anther inspiring activity could be spending time alone in the beauty of nature. You feel joy by being one with the greater whole you often feel in these types of activities.
The small things that bring you joy. Pay attention to the small things that bring you joy. The sunrise or sunset. Mist over a lake. Wildflowers from your children. Your dog’s wagging tail. Laughing with friends. The little things turn into big joys when you recognize them and let them be a part of everyday.
Connecting with other positive people. Having compelling conversations with friends, family, and strangers to feel joy. Social interaction increases a person’s positive emotions especially if you surround yourself with happy people.
Taking time out of the normal day-to-day work and finding ways to enjoy your life is essential in creating a fulfilled and happy existence. Implement hobbies you enjoy, get some type of movement in daily or find something to do that gets you into a state of flow, brings you joy and keeps you interested.
